Determinants of Ethics

Determination of what is right or wrong behavior is not an easy task. There is no ethical principle which is eternal and universal. Abortion is morally wrong for some people, but it is not for others. Pornography is acceptable in some societies, but unacceptable in others. At one time slavery was not morally wrong in some parts of the world whereas it is considered highly unethical in most of the modern societies.

Some of the important determinants

·        Culture and upbringing: Culture and upbringing can have a significant impact on an individual's ethical behavior. The values and norms of the society in which a person is raised can shape their perception of what is right and wrong.

·        Personal values and beliefs: An individual's personal values and beliefs also play a crucial role in determining their ethical behavior. These can be shaped by a variety of factors, including religion, education, and personal experiences.

·        Legal and regulatory frameworks: Legal and regulatory frameworks also play a critical role in shaping ethical behavior. Laws and regulations provide a framework for what is considered acceptable behavior in society.

·        Organizational culture: The culture of an organization can also have a significant impact on the ethical behavior of its employees. An organization that values ethical behavior and provides training and support for ethical decision-making is more likely to have employees who act ethically.

·         Peer pressure: Peer pressure can also influence an individual's ethical behavior. People often conform to the behavior of their peers, even if it goes against their personal values and beliefs.

·         Personal incentives and rewards: Personal incentives and rewards can also affect an individual's ethical behavior. If an individual is rewarded for unethical behavior, they may be more likely to engage in that behavior in the future.

In summary, the determinants of ethics are complex and multifaceted, and involve a combination of personal and societal factors that shape an individual's perception of what is right and wrong.
